Gdańsk, Danzig, City of Freedom – the Royal Capital of Pomerania stands proud on the shores of Baltic. Located in northern Poland in Pomeranian Voivodeship, Gdańsk boasts 470 907 citizens. It is visited by more than 3,000,000 tourists every year. One of the top hot spot destinations in the region, Gdańsk had surprisingly humble beginnings dating to more than 1000 years ago.
The very first mention of Gdańsk in written history goes as far as year 980 when St.Wojciech visited the Gydannyzc to proselytize the population. His valiant efforts made him be remembered as a saint patron of Gdańsk. The princes of Pomerania worked very hard over the next centuries to turn this small humble village into an increasingly more prominent trade and craft hub. This marks the start of Gdańsk’s tradition of cultural dialogue and inclusivity. Pomeranian Princes encouraged and invited their neighbors to come and visit, offering a place to stay for any crafters or traders looking to start a new business. This way, Gdańsk became richer and richer, while becoming increasingly multi-cultural. Openness and cultural freedom became defining perks of Gdańsk heritage, and remain to be that even today.
Gdańsk joined Poland peacefully in the year 1282, thanks to a diplomatic agreement of mutual cooperation. Together, we were stronger!
