The roots of Krakow Dragon Festival
You’ve probably heard about the Wawel Dragon legend, right? If not, let me take you back, to the early days of Krakow.
According to the legend, there was once a terrifying dragon that lived in a cave beneath Wawel Hill, right next to the Vistula River (you can also visit that Dragon’s Den btw). That dragon was a fire-breathing monster that terrorized the townspeople. It demanded food and if it didn’t get enough, it would burn down villages and eat livestock. Some say it even snacked on humans… King Krakus, the city’s legendary founder, was desperate to stop the creature. He offered a reward to anyone who could slay the dragon. Many brave knights tried. All failed.

Then came a young, clever shoemaker named Skuba. He wasn’t strong, but he had brains. He stuffed a sheep’s skin with sulfur, left it near the dragon’s cave, and waited. The dragon took the bait, ate the sheep, and suddenly started burning from the inside. In panic, it ran to the river and drank and drank and drank… until it literally exploded. That was a brutal method to get rid of a dragon, but effective. Krakow was saved, and the humble shoemaker became a hero. And that’s the story Krakow has cherished for generations.
The Krakow Dragon Festival was created to celebrate this local legend in a fun and creative way. It brings together art and folklore, and turns the terrifying beast into a symbol of joy and imagination.
