Nice is the largest of the cities and the capital of the famous Côte d’Azur, and also one of the most distinctive places in all of France. And there is nothing surprising because the history of this coastal city was turbulent and full of turns. The ancient Greeks and Romans had their first settlements here, in the 13th and 14th centuries it was part of Provence, and only in 1860 was it annexed to France by Napoleon Bonaparte.
The 18th and 19th centuries brought a boom in mass tourism, led by the wealthy British aristocracy. The city became one of the most important resorts for the British upper class (even Queen Victoria vacationed here). It was during this period that the famous Promenade des Anglais (which British aristocrats helped to build) and many impressive buildings that are fine examples of Belle Époque architecture were constructed.
All of this has shaped today’s Nice, which on the one hand is the fifth largest city in France and one of the country’s most important commercial centers, while on the other hand, the coastal area looks like a larger beach resort. However, it seems that there is something for everyone in Nice. Beaches, a long promenade, a historic old town, Roman ruins, lots of restaurants and pubs, museums and galleries – but also hills and walking trails – the choice of attractions really is wide.
CAPITAL OF THE AZURE COAST
About 350,000 people from all over the world live here, making a cultural mix visible at every turn. The seaside promenade is up to 7 km long and the city is surrounded on three sides by mountains. Nice is worth visiting at any time of the year! Nice is a cosmopolitan city. Here you’ll meet people from all over the world, hear all possible languages and eat dishes from the most remote corners. The sun shines most days of the year and the climate is mild.
The city itself can be explored on foot or by using the city’s fantastic bike system. You can ride them all along the Promenade des Anglais and the whole city center, which fortunately is relatively flat. It is impossible to get bored in Nice! The attractions of Nice are the wonderful viewpoints, the beautiful architecture, the museums with interesting art collections and also the Mediterranean character of the city mixed with the French-Italian way of life.
The Old Town of Nice is all about narrow streets, colorful townhouses and the smell of food. You don’t need a special plan to explore it. Just walk ahead and get lost in the maze of passages and streets. This way you will discover many interesting pubs, restaurants and stores with Provençal and French products. The Old Town is home to the largest Provençal market in the region, Cours Saleya. It is open all week, but on Mondays, antique dealers from the area exhibit their products here. Also worth seeing is Place Rossetti in the Old Town, Castle Hill or the Old Port.
