The Montserrat Mountain was chosen by monks
Although we aren’t able to determine when exactly conventuals decided to build the Montserrat Monastery, it’s believed that four of the chapels were created back in the 9th century by hermit monks who devoted their lives to prayer.
Unfortunately, only one chapel - St. Isle is still standing today and it welcomes thousands of travelers each year. Wondering why it’s worth choosing the Montserrat tour from Barcelona?
Get to know the history of the world’s famous Benedictine Monastery
The Monastery of Montserrat was officially founded in 1025 by the Abbot of Ripoli and Bishop of Vic. It continued to function peacefully for hundreds of years, but unfortunately its more distressful times began in the 19th century.
The sanctuary was destroyed by Napoleon's army in 1811-1812 and monks were forced to leave it during the Spanish Civil War that took place between 1936-1939.
Fortunately, the monastery was reconstructed and tourists from all over the globe who take part in guided tours have the opportunity to visit the breathtaking area, listen about the life of monks and admire the breathtaking views, unique basilica and museum full of history.
Interestingly, many tourists decide to visit this site mainly due to the statue of Black Madonna, declared the patron saint of Catalonia. This remarkable figure dating back to the 12th century can be found above the altar in the Basilica of the Monastery. There, you can listen to a charming choir consisting of 50 boys who sing laudable songs in the honor of the sanctuary each day.
See what the life in the Montserrat Monastery looks like
Wondering what it would be like to live in a monastery? Or what do these monks do all day apart from the prayer? Well, it turns out that their life philosophy is pretty simple.
The Montserrat Monastery is inhabited by approximately 100 monks who decided to devote their lives to work and prayer. They follow the Order of St. Benedict and believe that every trait and every person is important.
The monks have various occupations - some of them manage the monastery and introduce pilgrims to its history while others work as academic teachers of history, liturgy, music, theology or Bible studies.
Explore the Montserrat Museum
In 2006 the Montserrat Museum was declared the Museum of National Interest. Visiting this place gives you an unprecedented chance to admire works of real tycoons of the art world such as El Greco, Dali, Giordano and Monet. The museum abounds in both old and contemporary paintings, Byzantine icons as well as liturgical and archeological exhibits. It’s a must-see destination that will definitely soothe your soul.
