A guide to Madeira – everything you need to know

Madeira, discovered in July 1419 by João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz, is one of the Portuguese islands in the Atlantic Ocean. It’s also a part of an archipelago that consists of Porto Santo, Desertas and Selvagens. Apart from its impressive greenery, the place is renowned for being one of the highest volcanoes in the world.

It’s an extraordinary island that appeals to people searching for locations not affected by human activity. Remarkable mountain ranges, gorges and cliffs, including Cabo Girão, were shaped by erosion, while local primary forests have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thanks to its mild climate resulting from the unique topography, Madeira is called the island of eternal spring. It’s a perfect combination of captivating history, breathtaking views, heavenly cuisine and cosy towns. In recent years it’s been appreciated for its incredible safety which makes it an ideal destination for carefree vacations.

Top attractions in Madeira

Madeira Airport is located in Funchal, the capital of the island, which abounds in monuments and attractions. Funchal Cathedral dates back to Portugal’s Age of Discovery and was constructed in the early 16th century with the use of pyroclastic rock quarried from the cliffs of Cabo Girão.

Take advantage of a cable car going up Monte Hill, 600 meters above the sea level, and visit eye-pleasing Monte Palace Tropical Garden adorned with architectural elements resembling a Japanese pagoda.

If you’re an avid Real Madrid supporter, the CR7 Museum is a must-see attraction located in the city center. But where to go next?

What to see apart from the capital?

Once you visit Funchal, it’s time to explore other destinations. The island isn’t solely about sunshine and beaches – see the breathtaking Cabo Girão cliffs west of Câmara de Lobos, one of Madeira’s earliest settlements from the 15th century. The views are truly impressive and it’s possible to appreciate them thanks to the highest European cliff skywalker built in 2012.

With the use of our transfers, you can easily explore Santa Cruz and its astonishing historic church – Igreja Matriz. Visit Santana designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The place is known for the richness of its ecosystem, sustainable living and biodiversity conservation. Sao Vicente, another destination that can be comfortably reached with MrShuttle, is a small town where you can go hiking and admire views from the highest peak of the island or traverse picturesque caves formed after an eruption 890 thousand years ago.

After such an eventful day, enjoy your evening in one of the cosy restaurants sipping on poncha, a local drink made with sugar cane, rum and limes.

I highly recommend this company. The car for 6 people was waiting for us even before the scheduled time. The drivers were super nice and the car ( minibus) clean and comfortable. Good price too and you can pay in cash or credit card if you order via website.

Excellent company - both for transfers and tours! We booked a transfer with the company as we were originally due to arrive at night. However, our flight was canceled and we had to re-arrange both the dates and the hotel we were staying at. The driver who picked us up was very polite and waiting for us when we came out of the arrivals door, the vehicle was spotlessly clean as well. We also had a transfer back to the airport and the same could be said of that journey. Also, the office staff was incredibly helpful when our flight plans were changed and new vouchers with updated details were issued within the hour! I would recommend this company both for transfers and tours!
