Experience popular attractions during Porto tours

Before we get into too many details, first things first! There are a few attractions in Porto that you definitely have to see during your time there. We prepared a quick list of Porto tours that you simply have to experience, just take a quick look!

Sightseeing in the city center

  • Ponto Dom Luis I: You may have heard that Porto has quite a number of bridges, but Dom Luis I is perhaps the most iconic one. This iron bridge, built in 1886, has two levels and connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia. It is also a popular spot among locals and tourists alike to enjoy the views and the sunset.
  • Cais da Ribeira: This historic district, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, is full of colorful buildings, winding streets, restaurants, and of course history. Make sure to explore this historic area, walk along the riverbank, and take some time to enjoy a sample of traditional Portuguese food. It should also be your main direction during evening hours.
  • Sé Cathedral: This Roman Catholic Church is one of the oldest monuments in the city and was built in the highest point of Porto. Although it dates back to the 12th century, it is now a mix of architecture due to numerous renovations and changes.
  • Igreja dos Clerigos: With its tall bell tower it is one of the most iconic monuments in the city. Have a few hours? Dare to climb over 200 steps to the top for a great view of Porto.
  • Mercado do Bolhão: Visit the traditional local market where you can find a lot of fresh produce. Even if you’re not planning to cook your own food while in Porto, it will be worth your while to get a special look into the lives of the local people. Besides, you can get a little snack for lunch to keep you going!
  • São Bento station: This railway station is one of the hidden gems of Porto. Yes, you’ve heard that right! You might walk past it frequently as it’s in the city center without realizing how special it is on the inside. And what’s in there? The main hall’s walls are covered in thousands of azulejos (Portuguese tiles) that tell Portugal’s history.

Port wine in Vila Nova de Gaia

Wine tasting is one of the top experiences in Porto, so don’t miss out on it. Cross Ponte Luis I to Vila Nova de Gaia to learn about Port wine’s history, its production, and indulge in some wine tasting. Yes, as you can see this place is all about wine. When strolling along the waterfront, be on the lookout for a wooden boat. These traditional boats used to transport barrels of wine from the Douro Valley, but now they function more as cruise boats. In this city across the river from Porto, you will find the famous Port wine cellars which you can visit for free and even enjoy a wine tasting experience (also free of charge). Who knows, you might decide that buying a bottle of Port wine from these special cellars is totally worth the price.

Landscapes of the Douro Valley or Paiva Walkways in Aveiro

If you have more time to spare during your stay in Porto, consider going up to the Douro Valley, about 60 miles from Porto. It will most likely be a full-day tour, but you certainly won’t regret it. You can choose to go there by road, train, or even on a cruise boat, which will probably make it even more special, although possibly take a few more hours. This wine region of Portugal offers some stunning views of vineyards, hills, and the Douro river, so make sure to have your camera ready! The area is also a popular spot among hikers if you’d like to add that to your list of experiences in Porto. An alternative is a tour to Aveiro, about an hour away from Porto. Paiva walkways, which also offer some spectacular views, are a great spot for hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers.
