Gibraltar Walking Tour from Sevilla
Gibraltar - practical information
Gibraltar is a patch of British land bordering Spain, a stone of contention in the bilateral relations between the two countries. Gibraltar is one of 14 overseas dependencies of the United Kingdom. It is located at the southern edge of the Iberian Peninsula and borders Spain, to which it previously belonged. It is a relatively small territory, covering just 6.7 km. Most interestingly, it is one of the most densely populated regions in the world. The area is home to almost 30 000 people.
Gibraltar also has 12 kilometres of coastline that connects it to the Strait of Gibraltar. The distance from the port to Africa is just over 20 km. The biggest attraction of the area is the Rock of Gibraltar, which is the main attraction for most tourists. Its main peak is 426 metres high, allowing you to admire the surrounding beauty of the world (you can use a cable car to get there too). Especially since Gibraltar is also a place where different cultures have worked together for centuries. In this small area, you will find Anglican and Catholic churches, a mosque and a synagogue.
Gibraltar - Famous Monkeys and Caves of San Miguel
Gibraltar is, without doubt, one of the most original places on the tourist map of Europe. It is situated at one end of the Strait of Gibraltar, which separates Africa and Europe, the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. Gibraltar's location has meant that it has always been an important point on the world map.
In ancient times Gibraltar was considered to be one of the Pillars of Hercules, that is, one of the points defining the boundary of the known world. The other was located on a hill on the African side. An interesting fact is that traces of Neanderthals, who inhabited it tens of thousands of years ago, have been discovered on the famous Rock of Gibraltar. In 1704, during the War of the Spanish Succession, the British decided to attack the city. The siege lasted from the 1st to the 4th of August, after which the Spaniards withdrew from their positions under the attacking pressure. In 1713, under the terms of the Treaty of Utrecht, Gibraltar was recognised as a British colony (United Kingdom).
Today, one of Gibraltar's key industries is tourism. Tourists are welcome, the area is very safe and every visitor should feel at ease. At the top of the rock, you can meet the famous monkeys, and enjoy numerous attractions, including a visit to the unique Caves of San Miguel. The caves are 62 metres deep!
