Experience Lisbon
Go on a tour of Alfama
Want to know what is the one place in Lisbon you shouldn’t miss? Most people will tell you that Alfama is the answer. It is the oldest part of Lisbon and the only part of the city that survived the great earthquake of 1755. You can imagine how much history it carries! Alfama is also considered to be the birthplace of fado (Portugal’s traditional music that is best described as melancholic). Getting lost in the narrow streets of Alfama is one of the activities that should be on the top of your to-do list and the tour of Lisbon wouldn’t be complete without it. If you have a bit of time and are tired of walking up and down, hop on the yellow tram number 28 that goes through the hilly streets of Alfama. You can also stop by one of the popular miradouros, for example, Portas do Sol to get a great view of the neighborhood from the top. Chilling at one of these terraces is something of a local custom. Alfama is also a great place if you’re looking to enjoy traditional food and Portuguese wine. You can of course visit this historic area during our Classic Lisbon Tour. Just meet us in the city center (Marques de Pombal square) and let us guide you there.
Don’t miss the historic Belém
Okay, we may have lied a tiny bit. Alfama is not the only place in Lisbon that you shouldn’t miss. The district of Belém is another top place that you have to explore. Fortunately, it is also a part of our Classic Lisbon guided tour, so you don’t have to waste any time figuring out how to get there or fit it into your schedule. In Belém, you will find some important monuments which are of great significance. This is the place from which explorers like Vasco da Gama and Christopher Columbus sailed to discover the world. It is home to the famous UNESCO World Heritage sites like the Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery.
Take the time to explore this part of Lisbon and make sure to take a photo next to the Padrão dos Descobrimentos (Monument of the Discoveries). If all the walking and exploring made you a bit hungry and craving some food, stop by Casa Pasteis de Belém to have a taste of the original Pastel de Nata (you can be proud if you manage to stop at just one of these delicious pastries). It is worth noting that, the National Coach Museum in Belém is also on the itinerary of our Classic Lisbon tour. This museum has a unique collection of horse-drawn carriages. It may not sound exciting, but trust us that it is well worth your time! Also, keep in mind that if you happen to book the tour for Monday when the Jerónimos Monastery and Coach Museum are closed, the tour will go to Ajuda National Palace instead.
Cruise down the Tagus River
Looking for a tour for couples? If you want to treat yourself and your partner to something a little more special while in Lisbon, consider booking our Lisbon River Cruise. You will get to see the city from a different perspective and take some great photos with the 25th April Bridge in the background. Maybe when showing those photos to your friends back home you will manage to make them believe that you have not only been to Lisbon but also San Francisco? It is well worth a try! If you have enough time, try to stay in that area, or go to Lisbon’s main square to see the sunset. Of course, you can do this tour also with friends and family or solo. The choice is all yours! Please note, however, does this cruise is available only between March and October and can be canceled due to adverse weather conditions
Get charmed on a full-day tour to Sintra, Cascais & Estoril
If you’re in Lisbon for longer, it would be a shame not to take a day tour to see some of its surroundings. MrShuttle makes it extremely easy for you so that you can explore the area with an English-speaking guide and learn something more about Portugal. We can take you on a small trip outside of Lisbon to see Sintra, Cascais & Estoril. Sintra is a great material for a full-day tour and definitely Instagram-worthy. It is a charming small town that is home to a number of fairytale-like palaces and castles surrounded by nature. After a visit to the Palacio National de Sintra, we will transport you to Cabo da Roca where you can experience a bit of the Atlantic as it is the westernmost point in continental Europe. During hot days, Lisbon locals hop on the train to get to Cascais and enjoy its beaches. This, together with the small town of Estoril are also stops included in our trip. Depending on the time of the year, the trip with MrShuttle may also include a stop at Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth).
Sample some wine on a full-day Évora Wine tour
Are you a fan of Portuguese wine? If your answer is yes, our wine tour to Évora will be right up your alley. And if you’re not such a wine aficionado then don’t hesitate to join us on this tour either. Apart from local wine tasting, we will also guide you around this town that is full of history and home to the Chapel of Bones, one of the top sights to experience in Portugal.
Fatima tours
You may also want to go to Fatima, a town located about 88 miles from Lisbon that is visited by thousands of pilgrims every year. MrShuttle offers you an opportunity to get there in total safety as there’s no risk of getting lost with our English-speaking drivers. You can either choose a tour during which you can have a guided tour of the Sanctuary of Fatima or do it in a slightly more private way and stop by the Chapel of apparitions and attend the mass. Please contact our helpdesk for details regarding the dates and availability of Fatima tours.
Admire local street art
One of the things that make Lisbon popular is the art that you can see wherever you go. Street art especially became so strongly linked with Lisbon’s culture that you can even find street art tours and explore impressive graffiti art with a local guide.
Although MrShuttle doesn’t currently have that kind of tour on offer, we can’t omit to mention it. If you’re an art lover, walking around Lisbon with your eyes wide open should be on the top of your list of activities and you can even make your own private tour of it. Where to look for the best street art in Lisbon? The truth is that you can discover it pretty much anywhere as the murals keep popping up on various buildings.
However, if you don’t have many hours to spare, Bairro Alto, Graça, and Alfama will be your best bets, and easy to access.
That’s it for our mini guide to Lisbon. If you have any questions or want to know more details about MrShuttle tours in Lisbon, make sure to get in touch with us.
