What is the weather in Portugal? What is the best time of the year to travel?

Did you know that Lisbon is one of Europe’s sunniest cities? This means that if you want to soak in some vitamin D, travel to Portugal is your best bet, and you can do that during a significant part of the year. Of course, summer tends to be the most popular time for tourists, but if you’re not a big fan of sweltering heat, consider going in spring or early autumn, for example in September when the temperature is pleasant, and you can enjoy all the best places with smaller crowds then. Portugal doesn’t experience harsh winters, but they tend to be unpredictable with rain being very probable.

Best places: Cities to visit in Portugal

Lisbon

The capital city and Portugal’s largest city is the most obvious place to start with and it could easily fill an article on its own. Get ready for some stunning views, beautiful beaches, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the iconic Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery that has foundations dating back to the late 15th century. Make sure to stroll along the narrow cobbled streets of the Alfama district and snap lots of charming photos. Booking our Classic Lisbon guided tour is the way to go if you want to see these sights up close. Keep in mind that Lisbon is built on seven hills, so if climbing up and down (especially in hot weather) is not your idea of fun, then traveling with MrShuttle is a good alternative. For beautiful views of the Alfama houses and blue water, go up to the Miradouro das Portas do Sol, one of the many miradouros in Lisbon. If you’re looking for something to do in the evening, head to Bairro Alto, one of the oldest neighborhoods in Lisbon.

Porto

The second-largest city in Portugal is worth a visit all year round. Visit Porto’s Sé Catedral, taste some wine at the Port Wine Cellar, and walk around the old town which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Ribeira district located on the banks of the Douro River is also a must. Harry Potter fans will also want to stop by Livraria Lello which was an inspiration for Harry Potter’s library in Hogwarts. For some scenic landscapes away from the city, consider going to Douro Valley.

Sintra

Get your fill of beautiful castles, palaces, and nature. Pena Palace, Castelo dos Mouros (Moorish Castle), and Palácio and Quinta da Regaleira are just 3 of the many beautiful buildings in Sintra.  This uniquely charming city will have you awing at every turn and is definitely a great place for a romantic getaway. About 10 miles from Sintra, within Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais, is another must-see place that shouldn’t be missing on your itinerary – Cabo da Roca. Stand on the westernmost point of mainland Europe, feel the wind in your hair, and admire the spectacular views of the Atlantic. Talk about a highlight of your day! Don’t want to bother with public transport to get there? Don’t worry, you can also find a tour to Sintra and Cabo da Roca with MrShuttle.

Evora

Don’t forget to plan a day trip to this historic town not far from Lisbon. Located in the Alentejo region, Evora is home to the Roman Temple, as well as the Bone Chapel next to Igreja de São Francisco. This is also where wine lovers can do some wine tasting. You can experience Evora in all its glory with MrShuttle on our Wine Tour.

Fatima

Located about 90 minutes from Lisbon, this town has a special significance among Catholics due to apparitions reported in the early 20th century. Many pilgrims and tourists visit the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fátima every year, and you can do that with MrShuttle as well!

Óbidos

This small picturesque town is famous for Ancient walls, cobbled streets, a medieval castle (Castelo de Obidos), Obidos Aqueduct, and Ingreja de Santa Maria. Don’t leave without trying Gijinha, a traditional cherry liqueur.

Coimbra

If you’re looking to visit a place with fewer tourists then give Coimbra a shot. This city in central Portugal used to be the country’s capital and is home to one of the oldest universities in Europe (and the oldest in Portugal). If you happen to visit the University of Coimbra, don’t miss the beautiful Joanina Library.

Guimares

Go back in time to the birthplace of Portugal for a day trip from Porto. This place in the North of Portugal is where Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, was born. You can imagine how much historical significance this place holds! See the historic center, the ruins of the castle, and Penha Hill for views of the city.

Which is the one World Heritage site in Portugal I shouldn’t miss?

If you don’t have a lot of time, but want to see at least one of Portugal’s Heritage sites, try to visit Belem, especially if you’re in Lisbon. It is of great significance for Portugal’s maritime history and is home to the Monastery of Hieronymites and the Tower of Belém which earned the World Heritage status in 1983. See for yourself where Vasco da Gama and Christopher Columbus started their voyages. After that, those with a sweet tooth can stop by Casa Pasteis de Belém to taste the original Pastel de Nata.

I highly recommend this company. The car for 6 people was waiting for us even before the scheduled time. The drivers were super nice and the car ( minibus) clean and comfortable. Good price too and you can pay in cash or credit card if you order via website.
