Visit Old Town, Kazimierz, and Podgorze in 1,5 hours!

Sometimes it happens that travelers visiting Krakow get disheartened by the number of landmarks worth seeing. Fortunately, the golf cart day tour organized by MrShuttle shouldn’t take longer than 1,5 hours. Therefore, they're a great opportunity to see the most remarkable tourist sites in Krakow in one day, in a concise form. Thanks to it, you’ll be able to devote the rest of the day to relax. Perhaps for this purpose, you’ll choose one of the atmospheric restaurants in Kazimierz?

Our specially prepared route covers the most important monuments and landmarks in three historical districts in Krakow: Old Town, Kazimierz, and Podgorze

Old Town - top tourist attractions

When thinking about the Old Town in Krakow, it’s impossible not to mention the Main Market Square, Cloth Hall, or Wawel Castle. With our golf cart tour, you can explore them quickly and conveniently.

The Main Market Square is a kind of city center that makes it a natural starting and finishing point for all private city day tours. It was designed already in 1257, and it’s one of the greatest medieval European squares. Elegant and quaint townhouses surround the charming city center. When Krakow used to be the capital of Poland, the Main Market Square served as a place of public executions. This magic location on the map of Krakow is a must-see destination that holds hundreds of celebrations, from festivals of sausage dogs to New Year’s Eve parties. If you happen to visit Krakow during Easter or Christmas seasons, definitely check out the charming fairs taking place in Market Square.

The Church of St. Adalbert, also known as the Church of St. Wojciech, can be found at Grodzka Street and Main Square. It’s renowned for being one of the oldest Polish stone churches. The project was designed in the early Middle Ages. Initially, it was visited by merchants from across the globe. This sanctuary was named after Saint Adalbert, whose body was transported to Poland from Prussia. It’s definitely worth seeing this worship site, especially when taking into account that it’s located near another breathtaking shrine.

The Saint Mary's Basilica - the most monumental shrine in Poland

The St. Mary’s Basilica, located in the Main Square in Krakow, was built in 1221-1222 by Iwo Odrowaz, the bishop. Although the shrine was damaged during the Mongol invasion of Poland, it was restored between 1290 and 1300. Apart from being one of the most important churches in Poland, it’s also a breathtaking architectural masterpiece that makes Market Square one of the most charming and spectacular ones in the world. Every hour, you can hear the trumpet call from the church tower.

Mesmerizing cultural sites seen during the golf cart tour

When discussing Krakow and its Old Town, you can’t miss the Juliusz Słowacki Theater that has been active since 1893. This renowned Polish playhouse is adorned with the inscription “Krakow for the National Arts.” Jan Zawiejski designed the building, and it's one of the most appreciated theaters in Europe. If you have heard about Stanislaw Wyspianski, this is where his most outstanding plays had a premiere. Even without entering the building, you can admire its chic architecture and green belts surrounding it.

The St. Florian’s Gate is another important landmark of the Old Town that you can see during a golf cart tour with MrShuttle. It used to be a protective rampart built around the city after 1241 when the Tatars attacked Krakow.

The Krakow Barbican, built around 1498, is a fortified outpost connected to the city walls. It’s a historic site that served as a gate leading into the Old Town. Exploring this site means that you’ll be able to see the fortifications and defensive barriers that protected the city in the past. Today, it’s a pure tourist attraction that hosts many exhibitions.

Golf cart tour - day to feel like a king

The Wawel Castle is a captivating Romanesque stone building dating back to the 11th century. It was an impressively spacious and aesthetic house to kings and queens of Poland. Interestingly, the castle was the site where both lower and upper houses of parliament used to take place in the 16th century. The Old Town Wawel Castle private tour is an amazing opportunity to admire the building's splendour, tranquil surroundings, and enchanting Vistula viewing points.

Explore the Jewish district with MrShuttle

Kazimierz, its unique synagogues, and mesmerizing, cozy restaurants is another must-see place on the map of Krakow. The Jewish quarter abounds in one-of-a-kind tourist attractions that commemorate important and tragic historical events during World War II. Certainly, you must have heard about the former Jewish Ghetto or Oskar Schindler’s factory. With MrShuttle and our golf cart tour, you can visit the most monumental places in Kazimierz safely and conveniently.

Today, Kazimierz is only a district in Krakow. However, it used to be a city created by King Kazimierz the Great in 1335.

The Kazimierz Town Hall, our first stop during golf cart tour, is situated in Plac Wolnica, and it witnessed all the groundbreaking events that constitute the history of Krakow and Poland. The building was damaged and recreated twice as a result of fires and the Swedish Deluge. Fortunately, it was renovated in the 19th century, and today it attracts all tourists willing to explore this part of the city.

Remarkable synagogues in Krakow

Kazimierz is renowned for its rich Jewish history. Therefore, during our tour, you’ll also have an unprecedented opportunity to pay a quick visit to the most remarkable synagogues in Poland.

The Tempel Synagogue built-in 1860–1862 along Miodowa Street is renowned for its splendid interior decorated with gold and colourful paintings. It’s worth knowing that Krakow belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire when the temple was created. Like other remarkable sites in Krakow, the synagogue was destroyed during World War II as Germans used it to store ammunition. Fortunately, it was thoroughly renovated in 1995-2000; thus, you can admire it in all its glory.

The Popper Synagogue located on Szeroka Street is another noteworthy site built in 1620 by Wolf Popper, a wealthy Jewish merchant. Unfortunately, the synagogue was destroyed during the war, and today, you can admire a colourful Jewish-themed mural and a small gallery with impressive exhibits.

Surprised by the number of synagogues and churches? That’s not the end! The Izaak Synagogue, also known as the Isaak Jakubowicz Synagogue, was built in 1644 in Kazimierz. As you may guess, it’s named after its donor. Apart from that, during our golf cart tour, you’ll find the opportunity to see the Old Synagogue, the Remuh Synagogue, and its cemetery. All of this will allow you to immerse yourself in the rich history of Krakow.

Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory and the Jewish Ghetto

In 1941 Germans decided to transform Concord Square into the Krakow Ghetto, where the Jews gathered before deportation. In this place, people able to work were separated from those sent to extermination camps. In November 1940, Germans announced the Order for the Deportation of Jews from Krakow, which meant that Jews could no longer visit the city, and those living there needed a special permit. In 1943 the ghetto was emptied. The place was loaded with belongings such as suitcases, tables, and chairs. Today, the Ghetto Heroes Square is full of empty chairs commemorating Holocaust victims.

Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory is one of the most popular former metal factories. Today, you can find two museums there - the Museum of Contemporary Art and a branch of the Historical Museum of the City of Krakow. The factory was established by Michal Gutman, Izrael Kahn, and Wolf Luzer Glajtma in March 1937. At the beginning of the operation, it employed mainly Jewish workers due to economic factors as they didn’t receive any compensation and their recruitment was more affordable. Schindler was devoting part of the profits to buy food for his Jewish employees.  When the ghetto in Podgorze existed, Jewish workers were escorted to the factory by guards. However, once the ghetto was liquidated, the Jews who hadn’t been murdered were transferred to the Plaszow labour camp. Schindler fought for his employees and applied for a permit to establish a sub-camp on the premises of this factory. He claimed that having to walk more than ten kilometres a day significantly decreased the workers' effectiveness. This way, he provided them with better and more humane conditions.

The Eagle Pharmacy

As you can imagine, the Nazis didn’t ask anyone about their opinions before creating the Jewish ghetto in 1941. This way, the Eagle Pharmacy located on the Ghetto Heroes Square in the Jewish quarter was at the very heart of the district. Only Tadeusz Pankiewicz, the pharmacy owner, and his Polish employees were allowed to work in the ghetto. During the years of occupation, this place became an important centre of social life. Apart from providing food and medicines, it also helped people avoid deportation by falsifying documents. The employees risked their lives and witnessed the tragedy when hundreds of Jews were murdered by the Germans. Today, the pharmacy is a part of the museum, and it was redecorated to look as it did during the war. It’s worth devoting a few minutes to see this intimate site during our golf cart tour and contemplate the outstanding heroism of Poles.
