History and memory

Auschwitz is the most well-known Nazi concentration camp, somehow a “point zero” in the history of other camps. Operating from 1940-1945, it ended up being the place of massive extermination, not known in human history before. 1 million Jewish people were exterminated there, which also makes it the main place where the Holocaust took place.

Auschwitz consisted of around 40 sub-camps, but the most tragic events happened in Auschwitz I (administrative headquarters) with Crematorium I and Birkenau (Auschwitz II) with Crematoria II-V. The inmates in the first mass transport in June 1940 were political prisoners – Poles, there were around 700 of them. Ever since 1942 and the Wannsee Conference, a massive transportation of Jews from all over Europe has started. Initially, Auschwitz was not a death camp and the first gassing was in September 1941 – it included Soviet soldiers and some of the most sick prisoners. The situation quickly changed, though.

Due to the great location of Oświęcim – the city where the camp was located – where railroad tracks from many places in Europe crossed their paths, it was possible to organise transports of Jews, Roma, Russians and various other nationalities. Auschwitz was the only Nazi concentration camp with such an organised number and tattooing system, which later allowed to estimate almost the exact number of prisoners/murdered there. There were around 1.3 million inmates in Auschwitz-Birkenau during the 5 years of its existence, with approximately 1.1 million (mostly Jews) of them being killed.

Travellers say

Reviewers consistently praised the punctual, door-to-door hotel pickups, clear communication via text and WhatsApp, comfortable clean vans, and a bus video introducing Auschwitz. Travellers described knowledgeable English-speaking guides at both sites, efficient queue-skipping, and a generous, tasty packed lunch. Many found Auschwitz-Birkenau moving and sobering, while the salt mine was beautiful and uplifting, and rated the tour good value. Several noted it is a long day with an early start and warned of extensive walking and many stairs, unsuitable for limited mobility; one found a young Auschwitz guide hard to understand.

Service and communication excellent. Our driver Christian was friendly and kept us updated throughout the day. Ania was very informative during the Auschwitz-Birkenau tour and the guide at the salt mines was excellent too. Although we had an early start we benefited from being the first tour group entering the salt mines so it worked out well for us.

My daughter and I visited Auschwitz/Birkenau & Salt mines in July 26. It’s an incredibly sad surreal place you can almost feel the pain in the eeriness of the place, a very moving experience especially to my 16 year old history buff daughter. I chose to visit salt mines and Auschwitz/Birkenau on same day with hotel pick up and guides as I have slightly limited walking mobility at present after an operation and use the aid of a stick to walk. Our driver Becca was fantastic on time and very polite and never once did I feel rushed or didn’t know where / what we were doing. The tour guides I can’t praise enough at the salt mines very polite and knowledgeable. At Auschwitz/Birkenau our guide Michael was fantastic & knowledgeable I know the guides have a time limit but at no point did Michael rush me, he was a perfect gentleman. I did not miss any thing he asked me all along the way if I was ok, yes there were steps and rocky paths but I managed quite well with a stick and didn’t hold the group up. All in all a very memorable once in a lifetime experience which I Highly recommend. The driver picked me up on time, they spoke good English, and took very good care of us the whole day. The packed lunch was big enough. Everything was super! Please believe when they write that there are a lot of stairs and walking: we walked 15000 steps on the day and it is not suitable for someone with a walking stick!

What an amazing service. We were collected by a mini bus & taken to a central meeting point. Tomasz then took us for the day. He was so helpful & friendly, we knew exactly where we needed to be & when & had plenty of free time for refreshments. We will be recommending Mr Shuttle to everyone & will definitely be back to explore more with you. Most groups return to Krakow between 17:00 and 18:00, so we recommend keeping your evening free.

Expect a moderate amount of walking. Auschwitz-Birkenau involves roughly 5 km on foot across both parts of the Memorial, and the Wieliczka Salt Mine route includes about 800 steps (mostly descending) and around 3 km underground. A lift brings you back to the surface at the end, and comfortable, closed-toe shoes are essential.
