History and memory

Auschwitz is the most well-known Nazi concentration camp, somehow a “point zero” in the history of other camps. Operating from 1940-1945, it ended up being the place of massive extermination, not known in human history before. 1 million Jewish people were exterminated there, which also makes it the main place where the Holocaust took place.

Auschwitz consisted of around 40 sub-camps, but the most tragic events happened in Auschwitz I (administrative headquarters) with Crematorium I and Birkenau (Auschwitz II) with Crematoria II-V. The inmates in the first mass transport in June 1940 were political prisoners – Poles, there were around 700 of them. Ever since 1942 and the Wannsee Conference, a massive transportation of Jews from all over Europe has started. Initially, Auschwitz was not a death camp and the first gassing was in September 1941 – it included Soviet soldiers and some of the most sick prisoners. The situation quickly changed, though.

Due to the great location of Oświęcim – the city where the camp was located – where railroad tracks from many places in Europe crossed their paths, it was possible to organise transports of Jews, Roma, Russians and various other nationalities. Auschwitz was the only Nazi concentration camp with such an organised number and tattooing system, which later allowed to estimate almost the exact number of prisoners/murdered there. There were around 1.3 million inmates in Auschwitz-Birkenau during the 5 years of its existence, with approximately 1.1 million (mostly Jews) of them being killed.

Salt mines are more interesting than Auschwitz, certainly less depressing and they are actually Polish. The cathedral there is extremely impressive. Best moment of my trip to Poland! Like I'm still getting happy as a child thinking about it!

A must-do if you visit Krakow. Booking the trip was easy and the trip was very professionally run. The transfer was very comfortable. It was very quick getting into Auschwitz with the guide who was also great and made the trip for me, giving us plenty of information and letting us take it all in. It was a very moving experience. The salt mine was very good also, and I would visit again. The whole day was good, it was a full day and I would consider both trips separately.

I made the booking online, and for 70 Euros, I could visit Auschwitz and the Salt Mine both. Lunch, hotel pick up and drop off were also included in the tour price. I had a confirmation email me shortly after the booking and the night before the trip I received a text with the exact time of my pickup. 0815: I was picked up outside my hotel by one of the guides from Krakow Shuttle, exactly on time.

A emotional and tiring day but well worth it and great service by Mr Shuttle. Krakow to Auschwitz took us a good 1 hour 20 on the coach and from Birkenau back to Wieliczka Salt Mines that took a good 1 hour 30. Overall I think this is a fantastic trip if you want to see 3 of Krakow's main sites in one day.

The tour was so well organised and very informative. Starting on the bus with a documentary film which prepared us for the tour. Auschwitz-Birkenau was a very solemn, emotional and sobering experience. The Salt Mine amazing and very beautiful. The packed lunch was delicious and well worth the extra. Our driver/tour guide Michael was excellent and so helpful, even to the point of fixing my friends broken spectacles. I can highly recommend Mr Shuttle.

This is a full-day tour (10-12 hours). Most groups return to Krakow between 17:00 and 18:00. We recommend keeping your evening free and not booking any dinner reservations before 19:00. Looking for a shorter trip? Our Auschwitz-only tour returns by 13:00-14:00.

Yes, both entrance tickets are included in the tour price — the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum skip-the-line ticket and the Wieliczka Salt Mine guided tour ticket. We reserve both time slots in advance so you do not need to book anything separately or wait in queues. You can also book each attraction separately: Auschwitz Tour or Salt Mine Tour.

A lunchbox is provided if your chosen option includes it, or if you add it as an extra during the second part of the booking process. The lunchbox is served between the two attractions on the Auschwitz & Salt Mine package tour. A vegetarian option is available on request — let us know your preference when booking.

Also need an airport transfer in Krakow? We can arrange that too.

You can cancel or reschedule your booking free of charge up to 48 hours before the tour departure time. Cancellations made less than 48 hours in advance are subject to the full tour price, as entrance tickets to both Auschwitz and Wieliczka are pre-booked and non-refundable. Contact us by email or phone to make any changes.

The full day tour takes approximately 11 hours. You will spend around 3 hours at Auschwitz-Birkenau (2 hours in Auschwitz I and 1 hour in Auschwitz II Birkenau) and 2.5 hours exploring the Wieliczka Salt Mine underground. Travel time between sites is included.

Bring comfortable, closed-toe shoes and a warm layer — the temperature inside the Wieliczka Salt Mine is a constant 17–18°C year round. The route includes approximately 800 stairs, so comfortable footwear is essential.

It is a full day — around 10 to 12 hours — but it is comfortably paced. You visit Auschwitz-Birkenau in the morning with a certified guide, then descend into the Wieliczka Salt Mine in the afternoon, with door-to-door transport between the two UNESCO sites and a break in between. Most groups return to Krakow between 17:00 and 18:00, so we recommend keeping your evening free.

Expect a moderate amount of walking. Auschwitz-Birkenau involves roughly 5 km on foot across both parts of the Memorial, and the Wieliczka Salt Mine route includes about 800 steps (mostly descending) and around 3 km underground. A lift brings you back to the surface at the end, and comfortable, closed-toe shoes are essential.
